DCVA vs. RP — which do you need?

The main difference is the level of protection. A Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) gives basic protection for low-risk applications; a Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly (RP) adds a relief valve for superior protection in higher-hazard settings.

Why It Matters

Protecting Toronto’s drinking water

Backflow is the undesired reversal of water flow that can pull contaminated water back into the public drinking water system. It happens in two ways:

Back Pressure

Private-system pressure exceeds the City supply — caused by pumps, elevated tanks, or boiler temperature changes.

Back Siphonage

City supply pressure drops below the private system — caused by water main breaks or nearby firefighting.

Backflow testing FAQ

Testing is required once every 12 months. Each device on the property must be tested individually, and any newly installed or replaced device must be tested immediately after installation.
Backflow is the undesirable reversal of water flow that lets contaminated water enter the clean supply. It is caused by changes in water pressure (back pressure or back siphonage) and poses serious health risks.
Yes. Our team consists of OWWA-certified plumbers and Cross Connection Control Specialists (CCCS) experienced in backflow prevention testing, reporting, and tagging.
If a device fails, corrective action is required before compliance is restored. We handle the repair or replacement, retest the device, and submit the documented results to the City.
Absolutely. We encourage property owners to book annual inspections ahead of time so compliance deadlines are never missed. We’ll set a convenient recurring schedule for your property.
A single device is usually tested in under an hour. Properties with several devices take longer, but we schedule the work to minimize disruption to your operations, and water is only shut off briefly at each device.
Yes. We tag each device, prepare the digital test report, and submit the results to the City on your behalf — so you don’t have to chase any paperwork to stay compliant.
